Chapter 9
Otto lifted his cup of coffee to his lips and took a small sip. The morning sun had risen a few hours ago, but there was still a cold nip to the air, enough of one that the hot coffee he was drinking really hit the spot.
He was looking out the second-floor window of his bedroom, watching Patch and Sam walk around the large meadow behind his house. There was a very strong part of him deep down inside that ached to walk with them and be by their sides.
There was an even bigger part of him that was scared to death of the two men. Patch and Sam had the ability to destroy him, and he knew it. Patch said that he forgave him and that he wanted to stay, but neither man had made a move to claim him, or even hinted that they planned to claim him.
The moment Patch said they would stay, Sam had gone into action, making phone calls and resigning his position with the council and putting in his notice as a state trooper. Apparently, being his mate was a full-time job.
Otto’s shoulders heaved as he sighed deeply instead of sobbing. He felt bereft, desolate. Even knowing he had Kumiko’s support wasn’t making him feel any better. He was starting to get an idea of what drove his father insane.
It was the isolation.
Otto had more power than anyone in his pride, and yet he was more alone than any of them. This early in the morning and he could already see signs of life from his pride members as the lights came on in their houses.
He knew behind the walls of their houses, they were greeting each other, sitting down to have breakfast together, and going off to work or school or wherever it was that they needed to go—all with the knowledge that at the end of the day, they would be back behind those same walls with the ones they loved.
He just had walls to come home to, and even those were tainted by his father’s rule. He hated the house he lived in. It was a glorious monstrosity. The entire pride could move into the large mansion and there would still be rooms left empty.
After Otto moved in, he had the third and fourth floors closed down along with the west wing of the second floor. It left the east wing, which boasted of over five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a salon, and a small kitchenette. He could live there and never need another section of the house.
Five floors, including the basement, over twenty-four bedrooms and thirty-six bathrooms, two libraries, a ballroom, wine cellar, two studies, an office, and a detention area in the basement with four cells, and Otto hated every inch of the damn place.
Only evil had been here.
Otto understood that his half-brothers had grown up in this house and at one time their mother lived here, but even then Alpha Aldo had ruled the place with an iron fist, stamping down any resistance or thought process that didn’t match his own evil ways.
